both to an extent, but tackling is more, of how bad you WANT to hit them hard, and how explosive you are.

i'd say squats, becuase your midsection and legs are what makes you explosive when you tackle. your shoulders adn arms should be strong enough to wrap up though.

I would say the best exercise to help you get explosive in tackling (tackling is honestly more of the technique when it comes down to it) is powercleans...

Power cleans for a lineman, maybe hang for LB's and DB's.

How will squats improve tackling? Practicing tackling is what will improve tackling.

So will a guy who squats 900 pounds be a good tackler?

core strength + grip work will help

i never said practicing tackling doesnt help, you'd be stupid to say that. but lifting weights, like squatting or almost any other workout, will give you an advantage.

if he has the balls to! weights just give u a huge potential to hit hard! you need to want to do it! and have good technique! i no ppl how squat huge but are afreid to tackle hard dunno why they just are! and if they are afraid or go in half hearted then t will be a shit tackle if it even works! alot of it has to do with your mind set initially then strength comes into it! iv seen a 140 pound(5 ft 9) guy dump(pick up into the air and throw down) my friend 220 pounds(6 ft 3) just because his technique was amazing and he wanted to do it! and he had the mind set! it was the weirdest thing iv ever seen! and this was only in training! in matches he does it to bigger guys! get you technique and mind rite then strength will work! but i you can squat huge it can give a massive confidence boost so you will try btr!

I would say that bent over rows with a sandbag or something to that extent would be best.

Better grip strength and ability to pull will help you tackle better the most. I don't know about you, but I usually dont see tackles being made witha bench press motion.

Who is that one safety(or is it a cb?) that does that all the time... might be the guy on the colts... I was watching a clip and he just wraps up and sort of suplexes the guy.. very intense.

Most athletes do not understand the difference between football skill development and athletic ability development.

Skill refers to the blocking and tackling, cutting, route running, etc as well as game stategy and such -- in short, what the football coach teaches you.

Ability refers to those things that PRECEDE skill -- speed, strength, agility, power, flexibility, endurance, coordination, and so on.

Squats and bench are designed to improve strength or speed strength in various parts of the body -- an ability. So the question should be, "will improving strength in my pecs and shoulders, and triceps improve my tackling?" Well, that depends on whether or not your strength is optimal in those areas.

The same is true for lower body and trunk.

Now you get into speed strength (how fast you can lift a given weight) vs. absolute strength (how much you can lift without concern for speed). This is a topic that can blow the minds of athletes.

You need to develop optimal strength in ALL areas of your body. If one area is sub-par, it may need more work.

Hope this helps.
