Right now I'm playing running back and I'm a freshman gonna be a sophomore next year. My running style is mainly power (weighing 180 at 5'8) I also have A LITTLE speed running a low 4.9 forty and a 4.31 pro agility. I injured my shoulder and I'm about to have surgery so now all I can do is leg workouts and plyometric type workouts. By the time I'm able to lift upper body weights and squat and powerclean again, it'll be late april or early may. My bench max with the injured shoulder was 235, and squat max was 365. So should I try to keep training as a power running back, with size and strength, but running just a 4.9 or should I try to cut down about 10-15 lbs, and try to aim for a 4.5-4.6 forty and maybe 4 flat pro agility and maybe drop the bench pressing and all that and focus on leg workouts and sprinting? and what I'm trying to ask is should I aim for being a speed and quickness running back with strength, or an average speed and mostly power running back

I think a lot of it depends on the offense your school runs...so many teams are going to the 1-back Urban Meyer spread option stuff and that really demands a do-it-all back in the mold of an Edgerrin James or Reggie Bush - a guy who can run for power, speed, finesse, and catch passes out of the backfield.

If your 4.9 is LEGIT (electronically timed instead of hand timed), that is very fast for a sophomore. If that 4.9 is hand timed, it is probably more like a 5.1-5.2 or so, which STILL is probably at least average. You sound like you have a pretty decent foundation built. My advice to you would be to not worry about cutting weight. Instead, increase your lean body mass, get stronger, and get faster.

I'll tell you what, if I had a sophomore TB who was 180 pounds, strong, and ran a legit 4.9-5.0 forty, my frosh-soph team would be 9-0!

a good rb is one that has all the skills, someone who can plow over people for that short yardage gain and also can speed by people around the outside, like bush, white, LT, Edge.

A good example of a Running Back is a Reggie Bush type back.

So what is a good Running back for a Diamond offense.

at 5'8", you are not going to be able to be a power back for long as you move up in levels. I suggest you cut 10-15 and become a quicker back, but still try to keep your strength levels real high.

And you better be doing GHRs.

He's gonna grow some more, I'd rather be a power back...

True, but at his age, I doubt he has a low BF% amount at 180lbs 5'8" , so either way he should cut some.

I remember those pictures he posted on here earlier, his bf% is fairly low.

another question I have is, if I do a plyometrics program, would that help me out at all in football? (The type of program that focuses on ur vert, but still gets you faster and more agile)

Jeez..we're built pretty much the exact same way..except I'm already a sophomore. As for what I'd do in your situation, I would definitely work on speed and agility more, while trying to maintain your weight/power. Your squat for your age is simply outstanding and I'm sure you could hit 425 or so by end of school year if you hit the weights really hard...squatting 425 as a freshman would be insane! Really pound the hell out of your legs and I guarantee you that power will come.

Good Job man! I'd say focus on putting on muscle mass and getting faster, because the best RB's are a combo of strenth and speed. But you start one and do whatever you'll have a better chance at starting at, if the Varsity needs a power back, then don't focus just on speed. Do whetever is brighter for your future!

yup that's me for real and I've been lifting weights since I was in the 6th grade because I was already naturally strong and developed for my age, and i've just been lifting weights a lot ever since then.
